How You Respond to Stress, Emotions, and Discomfort Is SUPER Important
Jul 23, 2025
How do you calm and soothe yourself when you feel stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed? How long does it take you to recover from intense emotions? And how frequently do you avoid emotions or other discomfort because it makes it hard to function and get through the day?
We all have ways we respond to stress, emotions, or discomfort. We all have ways we either avoid or try to calm and soothe ourselves into recovery...but we learned them in the past, which is quite often not what we need in the present.
Here's something most people never consider: every single person has learned some way to do this, usually without even realizing it. We developed these responses to stress and discomfort as children and adolescents—sometimes by watching the adults around us, sometimes by figuring it out on our own when we had to cope or survive.
But here's the problem: what helped you cope and survive in the past may not be what helps you heal and thrive today. It served its purpose then, it was useful and maybe even helpful…but if you experience repetitive patterns of stress, emotions, or overwhelm - or if you’re stuck in survival mode - your automatic responses may not be helpful anymore. In fact, they may even be unintentionally holding you in those patterns you want to break free from.
The Problem
If you've ever been told to "just breathe" or "calm down" when you're stressed, you know that advice often falls flat. Sometimes it even makes things worse, leaving you feeling more overwhelmed and frustrated.
The truth is many of our automatic responses to stress and discomfort actually loop us [deeper] into patterns of distress. These survival patterns—these old, unprocessed emotional patterns your body is holding onto—may be:
- Causing physical symptoms, pain, or uncomfortable sensations
- Keeping you stuck in limiting, frustrating patterns that repeat over and over
- Preventing you from recovering quickly from stress and emotional discomfort
The Deeper Understanding
Your nervous system is your body's natural healing and regulating system. When we learn to truly support it—not distract from discomfort but move through it—everything changes.
Here's what most people don't realize: you might think you're taking action to calm and soothe yourself, but if you're actually just distracting from the stress, overwhelm, or pain, you're not helping yourself recover faster. In fact, distraction often keeps you stuck in those uncomfortable patterns longer.
The goal isn't to avoid stress or emotions. It's to help them move through you so you can recover faster and break free from those old, automated patterns that once served you but now hold you back.
The Current Reality
You could spend countless hours scouring the internet, searching for ways to calm and soothe yourself. You could filter through endless information, trying to figure out what's legitimate and what actually works through exhausting trial and error.
I know because I've been there. I've struggled through trying to figure it all out alone, and it felt like a never-ending cycle of setbacks. That time and energy you're spending searching could be going toward actually improving how you feel and function.
The Solution
When you know how to support your nervous system, when you have support so you don't have to figure it out and do it on your own, when all the resources you need are in one place, it becomes so much easier to:
- Discover what actually works for your unique nervous system
- Implement new skills sustainably into your daily life
- Break free from old patterns that keep you stuck
- Recover faster from stress and emotional overwhelm
- Make measurable, sustainable progress from your healing and self-care efforts
The Transformation
Updating your calming and soothing skills is one of the most important things you can do for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. When you learn new ways to respond in the present moment—ways that help you process things faster rather than distract from them—you'll discover something powerful:
Instead of being at the mercy of stress, overwhelm, and emotions, you'll reconnect with your innate ability to influence how you feel. You'll spend less time triggered and more time thriving. You'll break those old patterns from the past and create new ones aligned with healing and growth.
